Florida A&M University—affectionately known as FAMU—is more than a college on the highest of seven hills in Tallahassee. Founded in 1887, FAMU has grown from a small normal school into one of the most respected Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the world.
🎓 A Brief History: From Humble Beginnings to National Prominence
FAMU began as the State Normal College for Colored Students, created to educate formerly enslaved African Americans and their descendants during a time when access to education was intentionally denied. Over the decades, the institution expanded its mission, becoming Florida A&M College in 1909 and eventually Florida A&M University in 1953.
